Our Mission

 

 

 

The mission of Healing HeARTs is to hear out, represent, and amplify the voices and experiences of individuals who are often underrepresented and silenced through the power of artistic storytelling. We achieve this mission in two parts: First, we create a safe space for each individual to exercise maximum agency in constructing and telling their stories in the context of a one-on-one interview; Second, we galvanize our artistic, musical and literary talents to artistically portray their narratives by creating a representational artistic artifact which will be published on the Healing HeARTs website. The final artistic artifacts serve as a symbol of voice, identity, and courage for both the interviewees and the virtual audience.

Through performing this mission, Healing HeARTs seeks to not only enable our interviewees to experience the benefits of storytelling, but also mobilize their narratives to challenge the broader social structures that persistently normalize minoritized groups’ suffering and silence. We recognize that minorities’ lived experiences are underrepresented and that this gap in knowledge is harmful across a broad cross-section of disciplines such as in conflict studies, psychology, medicine, religion, and global activism. Through Healing HeARTs, we hope to share the lived experiences of minority individuals as they move through the world. We do so in our proud and humble struggle to create a more just world where all voices and experiences are given the attention and respect they rightfully deserve.
